Last winter, I wrote about Alpha Golf's V5 driver that the company sent to me.

Their rep, Joe Simon, offered me a variety of lofts and having absorbed enough of Tom Wishon's views on driver shaft length, I opted for a 12 degree loft and asked Joe to fit a 43 inch shaft to the head, instead of the usual off-the-rack 45 inch length that Wishon says is the kiss of death for amateur players (and many pros, for that matter; average length on tour is 44.5 inches).

The thing has been amazing and I have nothing but high praise for their drivers.

Well, Alpha has now gone the route that all the manufacturers have taken: the interchangeable shaft, first ballyhooed at the PGA Merchandise Show last winter.

I play a reasonable amount of golf but I have never found myself on a course where I thought, "Gee, if only I had a heavier shaft weight or a stiffer flex, then I'd really be set up for this layout".

So I still don't get the much-hyped benefits that are offered. I love my Alpha V5 with a 43 inch, regular flex shaft just fine, thanks. I get plenty of distance with it, thanks to a nice, high launch angle. Why do I want to mess around with a different shaft?

I frankly doubt that the pros change out the shafts on their drivers all that often, either.

But, if you want to find out a little more information about Alpha's version of the interchangeable shaft, Joe Simon sent me this link.
