Big Guns Ready To Jump Ship?
Filed in archive Golf Wanderings on September 30, 2008

I came across a very interesting story on Geoff Shackelford's fine blog. He, in turn, spotted the original and fleshed it out.
It's a fascinating take on how some of the big guns on the PGA Tour have plenty of time on their hands with a PGA golf season that is ending sooner than it has in years gone by, something about wrapping up golf so college and NFL football can take center stage.
What's fascinating is how there could be a shift of not just players but tournament money, too.
I wrote several months back when AT&T dropped its 2009 sponsorship of the Classic that we were entering a period when many American corporations were facing tough times.
That was well before Wall Street melted down, Lehman Brothers collapsed and AIG went under.
It seems that the European Tour is doing fine, at least for the time being. Much of the credit goes to American petro-dollars resting comfortably in banks and sovereign wealth funds in the Middle East, particularly Dubai.
The European Tour's run for the dough is bigger than the FedEx Cup and set to get bigger still.
Especially if the players mentioned in Shackelford's post do what some think they'll do.

That is going to be a major point of discussion for some time to come. But the interesting thing is that the PGA Tour is busy trying to ensure that nothing of that sort happens. They have already decided to prop up the Players Championship making it a ten million dollar event although the fact is that it was a nine million dollar event anyway till last year.
I had a word with a few of the guys on tour and what they seem to think and rightly so I guess is the fact that golf in Europe still does not have that buzz associated with golf tournaments as on the PGA Tour and maybe that is why few of the players might still be very reluctant to move on to the European Tour.
Having said that, one thing is for sure, the so called ‘buzz’ will follow the money and as long as the European Tour can sustain this great inflow of money then without a shadow of doubt we can say worrying times ahead for the PGA Tour. The European Tour website already shows what we can expect next season to be with them putting up a countdown to Race To Dubai.
