Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell led at the end of the first day of the US Open. At the end of the third round, however, the leader board stands with Johnson at the top with 6 under par. McDowell follows in second with -3, while Tiger Woods is in third with 1 under.

Johnson said "I love playing here. Today was a good day". The two Americans have the home advantage and McDowell has done well to hold on to his position in the top three, saying that he will "make the most of his great position". World number one Tiger Woods trails second place by 2 shots and will need a flawless round to catch up on Johnson's five point lead on him, the 25-year old playing on a form unlikely to hit many bogeys. Indeed, Woods has never won a major going into the last day trailing, but his determined display on the tricky back nine shows that he is ready for a fight.
