It's a great privilege to be able to tell you that Sandra Post has agreed to be one of our "go-to" experts here at eagleparbirdie.com.
For those of you who've been on another planet for the past 20 years, Sandra Post is an 8-time LPGA champion, including a major, twice winner of the Dinah Shore Tournament in back to back years, TV commentator, club designer with Jazz Golf, teaching pro and member of Canada's golf hall of fame
.In short, she knows a thing or two about golf.
Still, I was surprised when she answered one of my questions regarding equipment for women.
She said a lot of people ask her "if you had to buy just one club, what would it be?"
Now if you're thinking "wedge" because it's easy to hit and builds a better short game or "putter" because we can all be better putters, you would be flat out WRONG!
Sandra says, "The DRIVER would be my club. There is no reason today that ALL women shouldn't be hitting a driver." I must tell my wife.
A combination of good lofts (14 to 16 degrees) and long tees, she says, are enough for anyone to get the ball airborne off the tee-box.
"The shafts are light and there's plenty of flex (very important for slower swing speeds), all designed to generate more club head speed. The result will be more distance".
Sandra told me that the new drivers being made today have never been easier to hit. And, frankly, my own experience bears that out. I purchased a Taylor Made R5 two years ago and amazed myself when I discovered I could hit it pretty well.
But Sandra said there's another reason for choosing the driver over any other club. The tee-shot is so important. "When you have confidence in the tee shot, it takes a lot of pressure off the rest of the game. And it's a great feeling to walk onto the tee and look forward to hitting your drive". Amen to that!
