Sedona Golf Resort in Sedona, Arizona, is a perfect combination of stunning beauty and gee-whiz technology.
My wife and I played Sedona Golf Resort last August on a golf honeymoon and holiday (My motto remains: marry a golfer, play more golf!).
And I've got to say it was a fabulous round of golf. I like hot weather and the mercury in August in Sedona is guaranteed to punch through 100F by noon.
The day we played was no exception.
We arrived about 8 in the morning to beat as much of the heat as possible and warmed up at the range. Perfectly groomed, nice grass tee area, new balls.
Every golf cart at Sedona Golf Resort comes with a cooler on the back fender
(makes sense in Arizona) and it was filled with new ice. Now that is a nice touch. In fact, it was the little things that all contributed to a great day at Sedona. More on that in a moment.
Our drive up to the first tee was where the cool technology began. Our cart was equipped with a monitor and a GPS system and both kicked into gear as we approached the tee blocks. A map of the first hole appeared on the color screen showing hazards and yardages.
Club selection was no problem off the tee. Grab the driver and blast away. Who needs GPS for that?
As we drove along the cart-path to our respective shots, a glance at the monitor told us how far we were to the front of the green and to the pin. The monitor now displayed the undulations on the putting surface, as well.
If you are playing a course for the first time, club selection can be tricky. But with GPS, it was a no-brainer. And the yardage was accurate every time.
I became an instant fan of GPS and, for the rest of the round, it proved a god-send. Not once did I use the wrong stick. That helped me stay out of bunkers.
And I'll tell you what else GPS does for you: it speeds up play, never a bad think when a golf course is busy.
On the 10th tee, I realized I didn't have my trusty brass head Ping putter in my bag. I've had that putter since the early 80s and I love it.
Now it was gone. What to do? Go back, hole by hole, searching for it? Or simply push the button on the touch screen monitor and report a lost club?
Not ten minutes later, a guy from the pro shop drove up to us with my Ping in his cart.
See what I mean about the little things? That really impressed me. The technology combined with the rapid response from the clubhouse sent a clear message: "you're here to play golf and have fun. We're here to make sure that happens".
Now to the course itself. Just over 66 hundred yards long, Sedona Golf Resort is set in some of the most beautiful scenery you could wish for.
The red rocks that make Sedona famous surround the Gary Panks-designed layout. The effect is spectacular when set against the brilliant green of the fairways and putting surfaces.
In fact, where the GPS speeds up play, the breathtaking vistas cause you to stand on the tee blocks and in the fairway just gawping around at the mountains.
Sedona Golf Resort is worth every penny. Green fees in August were $125 but I would argue that is reasonable. Even in the brutal heat of an Arizona summer, the course was manicured to near perfection.
Staying in Sedona is easy; there's plenty to choose from, whether it's high end or bargain priced. In fact, you can stay right on the course at the adjacent resort.
And the restaurants are all top notch.
The scenery you get for free.
Fly into Phoenix, rent a car, and drive up the interstate for 2 hours. You're there.
You're also less than an hour to the Grand Canyon. And that is a whole other kind of amazing.
