The Unsinkable Michelle Wie

There is one thing that journalists everywhere love and that's a good story. Now, a good story can be a bad story. And often that's what constitutes a good story.

If you're a little confused, then let me simply say the name Michelle Wie and I think you'll get my drift.

Wie's precarious cliff-hanger of a career is a golf journo's dream. Without trying, the poor girl generates thousands of words of copy around the world.

She is caught up in a maelstrom of views and opinions churned out by golf's pundits and experts and the occasional ink-stained wretch.

Recently, noted golf writer Lorne Rubenstein talked to her swing coach, David Leadbetter in the wake of the departure of her latest agent, Greg Nared.

Leadbetter has been on record as suggesting that Wie's futile attempts to play the men's tour have done her immeasurable harm. Most recently, in his chat with Rubenstein, he went so far as to say "It was absolute madness for her to play them. That started the whole debacle. Now with Greg Nared leaving, you feel like this is the Titanic."

Rubenstein received a lot of emails and phone calls from other golf writers and broadcast journalists asking if Leadbetter was about to pull the plug on Wie himself.

That forced the Canadian journalist to write a follow-up in which Leadbetter emphatically denied he was about to bail on the 18 year old.

Rubenstein says he believes Leadbetter, a man he has known for 25 years. I have no reason to doubt Leadbetter myself, although I have never met the man. He seems to have integrity in what he does and respect for his clients.

But I can't help wondering why Leadbetter thinks it's his job to resign from? Coaches are fired from roughly 100% of their jobs last time I checked. And with the wobbly management running Team Wie (can you say Mom and Dad?), I don't know how he can avoid the fall of the axe.

So the views and opinions whirl around in cyberspace and through the airwaves about Michelle Wie's future and now they have sucked David Leadbetter into their vortex as well.

I wouldn't want to be her - or Leadbetter - for all the free golflinks lessons in the world.
