A three-man playoff at the St Jude Classic saw world No.3 Lee Westwood win his first PGA Tour title in 12 years in Memphis. He joined Karlsson and Garrigus for the four-hole playoff after the latter had thrown away his lead on the last hole. On the par 4 where he only needed a six to win he took seven.

Garrigus' inconsistency continues to be his own worst enemy, and he bogeyed on the first hole of the play-off. The two Europeans stayed level until the last hole, where Westwood took it after a spectacular wedge approach to the green and a five feet hole for the birdie.

This major boost to Westwood's credentials comes less than a week ahead of the US Open starting on Thursday. "I like being competitive before a major championship", said Westwood, " to be competitive in a tournament and boost my confidence".
